The Changes are Abound!
If you are visiting Carlton Landing this Spring you and have been here before, you will definitely see a difference, but will want to be aware of changes that have probably happened since you were here last. If you have not visited our little town, you are reading the right post!
You may have heard about or visited the General Store and Off the Hook Fish House, but both establishments ceased operation at the end of 2017. Since then, hard work and preparation have gone into providing excellent dining opportunities for you to enjoy in the Summer of 2018. The operators are still making adjustments to their new digs, menus, and when they will be open. All that to say, there will be no walkable eating places open in Carlton Landing March thru April of 2018. We will keep you up to date on the who, what, where, and when on the food situation around here as we get closer to the opening day of the Airstream Food Truck Court!
Your Meal Plan
We know when you book a vacation, one of the last things you want to do is cook. But, take the opportunity to make it fun! We enjoy packing up the picnic basket and heading to the pool to cook out on the propane grills provided for your use by the Carlton Landing HOA. Let the kids swim or play ping-pong while you cook up some hot dogs or burgers! You will also find grills located at the Community Garden or take the opportunity to meet your neighbors and borrow theirs.
There are a couple of grocery stores in Eufaula, but the selection is hit or miss on fresh veggies and other ingredients for your dietary requirements. If you plan to wait and get groceries on the drive in from OKC or Tulsa, your best bet is hitting the Wal-mart in Checotah. If you are coming up from the South, go to Walmart in McAlester. Both locations have a great selection of meats and seafood. We have found their organic and gluten-free selections to be growing by the month to keep up with the growing demand of their customers.
The Local Dining Line Up
First, see where Mama Tigs Pizza is set up and call in an order to pick up. They are a family run pizza truck that offers some of the best pie we have ever had!
Then, if you are up for a drive, there are a few local restaurants we love. For breakfast, head out of Carlton Landing, turn right on Hwy 9a toward Eufaula, take a right at the fork intersection of Hwy’s 9 and 9a to Longtown. Take in the scenic wonder of Longtown as you search for The Landing Cafe. It is found between the Sinclair gas station and Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant. Our kids dive in to the largest pancakes they have ever seen and Whitney and I usually go with the more traditional biscuits and gravy or whatever special they are running. They have a very friendly staff and open for breakfast and lunch. The Highway 9 Cafe is a relatively new place and we have heard good things. It is located in Longtown, look for the big white metal building on the north side of the highway.
If you turn left at the intersection of Hwy 9 and 9a and head into Eufaula, go find Adelita’s Mexican Restaurant which is on our “visit frequently” list. This little gem can be tricky to find, but it’s searchable in Google Maps. I am a fan of the Chili Verde which is tender chunks of pork sautéed in green chile based salsa! Can’t miss. It is served with rice, beans, tortillas, and a fajita set up. Chile Verde can be on the spicy side, depending on who whipped it up, so consider this your warning. Adelita’s does sell low-point beer, but no mixed drinks or margarita’s due to the proximity of a church. If some fantastic BBQ is your thing, check out I Don’t Know BBQ in Eufaula. I Don’t Know has a good sized menu with other than BBQ offerings for the picky eaters.
